Best place to buy a renovated iPhone
Apple should be your first port of call, if just to establish a benchmark for what is reasonable to pay for your chosen handset: Check if the Apple Renovated Store has the iPhone model you’re looking for. (It’s the US store. British readers have to try the British Apple Renovated Store.) At the time of writing Apple selling renovated models of iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max.
Apple’s renovated store tends to be the most expensive place to buy renovated iPhones – although it is still significantly cheaper than buying new. (The standard reduction on the Apple Renovated Store is 15 percent.) But there are benefits that come with this higher price. The Renover phones are all delivered with the same one-year limited warranty that you find, for example, on the brand new versions. And it is worth noting that any parts used in the renovation will be official Apple devices and all devices come with brand new batteries.
However, it is worth shopping around to make sure you get a good deal. There are plenty of other companies that live by renovating and selling iPhones. Here are some of the more prominent dealers of renovated and used iPhones:
Renovated iPhone SELECTIONS IN THE US
- Back Market: You get 30 days to change your mind and a 12-month warranty … or occasionally more.
- Decluttr: A popular destination for renovated devices, often with sales that cut out even more money. You can also trade with any of your old tech, gadgets and media (including books and CDs) to get steeper discounts.
- Ioutlet on eBay: offers competitive prices for renovated devices and also accepts other gadgets such as iPads, Apple Watches and Gaming Consoles.
- Amazon Renewed Store: This site’s biggest advantage is that buying everyone is supported by Amazon’s standard return policy, and its “renewed warranty” allows you to get a refund or replacement within 1 year of receipt of your product.
- Best Buy: Best Buy does not offer much information about pre-owned iPhones’ condition, but you can return within 14 days if the item is “unopened or defective in any way.”
- Walmart: Walmart sells not renovated iPhones directly; Rather, they come from other sellers. Return policies vary from seller to seller, but there are minimum requirements that apply universally.
Renovated iPhone SELLERS IN THE UK
- Back Market: You get 30 days to change your mind and a 12-month warranty … or occasionally more.
- Music Magpie: The British version of Decluttr and a great place to start looking for renovated iPhones. You may find that sales reduce the price further.
- HOXTON MACS: Don’t let Mac in the name fool you. HOXTON MACS has started selling renovated iPhones.
- Reboxed: Promises that devices “are fully tested and in perfect functionality.” All come with a 12-month no unclear warranty.
- Ioutlet or Ioutlet on eBay: offers competitive prices for renovated devices and also accepts other gadgets such as iPads, Apple Watches and Game Consoles.
- Amazon Renewed Store: While you can’t really sell on Amazon, unless you are a business, those who want to buy a renovated iPhone Amazon that is renewed have plenty of options to choose from. Its greatest advantage is that purchases everyone is supported by Amazon’s standard return policy, and its “renewed warranty” you can get a reimbursement or replacement within 1 year of receipt of your product.
- Envirophone: also allows you to trade with your old phone for credit to buy a renovated phone.
- 4Gadgets: offers a 12-month guarantee for all online orders.
- Smartfone Store: Look for the additional 10 percent discount for students and young people.
- RENOVER PHONE: Like most renovation sellers, this site offers a 12-month warranty. Less common is its policy of allowing returns within 14 days if you simply change your mind.
- The big phone shop: says it ensures that the renovation of phones “tested thoroughly, repaired and cleaned before being sent out.” Backs this with a 12-month warranty.
- Laptops Direct: You get a 12-month warranty on parts and labor. Take care of too little confusing classification system: “A3”, for example, means “average state.”
Where to buy a renovated iPhone on contract
You can download renovated phones on contract from the following carriers and dealers:
US carriers
British carriers
Outside of special dealers, there is also eBay and eBay UK (just be sure to check the seller’s feedback and read the descriptions carefully) and in the UK CEX.
Buying older iPhones new on contract
Another way to dampen the financial effect of buying a new iPhone is to go down the tested contracts offered by mobile providers. You will find older iPhone models in the online stores in many networks.
Prices are constantly changing, so we would recommend reading our best iPhone offer guidance regularly to see which offers are currently available.
Should I buy a renovated iPhone? What is renovated?
You may be worried about buying a renovated handset and thinking it would be like buying a used iPhone, but there is no need to be worried. Remember: Renovated and other hard is not the same thing. Renovated iPhones are owned but dried, tested and repaired to work as new.
IPhones Apple Seller in the renovated store was returned to Apple for various reasons:
- The previous owner could have exercised their consumer rights and returned the handset unused within 14 days (according to Apple’s refund and exchange policy).
- IPhone may have been used as a demonstration model.
- IPhone may have been returned to Apple due to an error.
The third item on the list may concern you, but you can be sure that Apple will have identified and determined any errors before reselling the device. The company says renovated products undergo “full functional test” and are provided with “real Apple part replacements (if necessary).” They also get “a thorough cleaning”, by the way.
There are plenty of benefits to buying a renovated iPhone:
- You get one year warranty.
- You get 90 days of technical support.
- Because you buy directly from Apple, there is no shipping costs and free returns.
- You can also take advantage of Apple’s 14-day return policy if you change your mind. (However, note that Apple is not the only seller who offers such a policy.)
Renovated vs. used: What is the difference?
If it is not already clear, a renovated iPhone is tested and repaired so that the handset acts as new (or as close to new as possible). An used iPhone is sold on the other hand simply as it is, which means that the device may not last as long and may have small imperfections or defects. Especially the battery will be a long -term concern.
There are other risks of buying used as well. If the previous owner has not dissociated their Apple ID from the device, you may be permanently locked out of the iPhone. Unfortunately, Apple’s customer service would also not be able to help you unlock the phone as the company has strict security policies. Such a situation would be less concerned if you know it and can easily contact the previous owner (and they remember their Apple ID details), but we prefer to avoid such complications starting with.
This is just another reason why buying renovated is a more reliable route to go if you wanted to pick up a previously owned iPhone.
What does renovated character A mean?
When you shop renovated, you may see character results such as A, B or C; This indicates the condition of the phone. Is it dinged up? Does it have scratches? Or is it completely spotless and untouched? The character gives you a general idea.
We say “generally” because these grades are not set by an independent organ, which means they can vary from retailer to retailer. How to degrade the characters usually:
- Grade A: Looks like new or has very few signs of wear
- Degree B: May have some minor scratches and some wear
- Degree C: Looks used and has obvious signs of wear
But some places go with fair, good and excellent or some other variation. (A place we have visited seems to classify everything as a plus a number – so a relatively bad handset would be rated as A3. This may beat some readers as a little confusing.)
It is unnecessary to say that Class A1/Excellent renovated devices will be more expensive than class C, but you still pay far less than you would for a brand new unit.
Pay attention to renovated warranties
Given that the quality of renovated iPhone devices may vary from retailer to retailer, it is important to be aware of the warranty. How long is the phone covered? The warranty allows you to get help or free repairs from the seller if you run into problems after purchase. Retailers typically offer a year and many allow “Quibble-Free” returns if you change your mind within 14 days. Check the fine writing.
