Bone Collect Larvae from Waianae Mountain range in Oahu, Hawaii
Daniel Rubinoff et al. 2025
The newly described “bone collector” caterpillar species explains with the body parts of dead insects so that it can live among spiders and crawl their prey. This is the only caterpillar Nown to use such ugly camouflage or has spiders like Roomatres – and it’s a carnivorous and a cannibal to start.
Daniel Rubinoff at the University of Hawai’i in Mānoa and his colleagues discovered the caterpillar as he wandered the Waianae Mountains in Oahu more two decades ago. They searched for other species in the same genus, HyposmocomaAlso known as Hawaiian Fancy Caterpillars. “We see this small, small bag covered in bugbits, and frankly we were not sure what it was,” says Rubinoff. “And then we’ll take it back [to the lab]And we realize that there is a small larva in there. “
The newly described species of Hyposmocoma – Who has not yet received a scientific name – lives on cobwebs inside tree trunks, among cliffs and other closed spaces. It’s about the length of a nail and feed on insects trapped in spider webs. “Only 0.13 per hundred of all larvae on the planet are carnivorous,” says Rubinoff. “So it’s incredibly difficult for a larva to develop to eat meat.”
The bone collector avoids being swapped even with a macabre method: adorns its silk box with fragments of dead insects and the spider’s moultic exoskeleton. The criterion is carefully shattered up each body part – which may include the myring head, Beetle Abdumens or Fly Wings – before weaving it to its disguise.

“It’s the only way to survive probably living with a spider – by covering yourself in bits of the spider’s own caste skin and its previous meals,” says Rubinoff. This leaves the larva and tastes more like a bag of waste than a juicy snack to his Arachnid housekeeper. After about two to three months, that?
If the bone collector’s accessories were not clumsy enough, this larva is also a cannibal. The researchers learned this after placing two of the larvae in the same cage, which led to the bigger party on his smaller, weaker brothers. This is why you only every bone collector per Spider web, says Rubinoff.
The researchers have found only 62 of these critters over more than 150 field surveys conducted over approx. 22 years, all within the same 15 square kilometers of the Waianae mountain range.
Genetical analysis indicates that its descent is about 3 million years older than the island of Oahu, which means it was once again was WAS -Spread. “The sale of people’s arrival in a place like this, we are lost to lots of native species,” says Rubinoff. “It’s a miracle that we were able to find [the bone collector]And really sad that they are so limited to this one place. “
