‘Ben Collector’ Caterpillar carries dead insect body parts such as disguise

The newly described “bone collector” caterpillar species explains with the body parts of dead insects so that it can live among spiders and crawl their prey. Daniel Rubinoff at the University of Hawai’i in Mānoa and his colleagues discovered the caterpillar as he wandered the Waianae Mountains in Oahu more two decades ago. The newly described species of Hyposmocoma – Who has not yet received a scientific name – lives on cobwebs inside tree trunks, among cliffs and other closed spaces. The bone collector avoids being swapped even with a macabre method: adorns its silk box with fragments of dead insects and the spider’s moultic exoskeleton. “It’s the only way to survive probably living with a spider – by covering yourself in bits of the spider’s own caste skin and its previous meals,” says Rubinoff.
