On Thursday, January 9, Mandy Moore took to her Instagram in a now-deleted post to share a link to a GoFundMe page.
“Please consider donating and sharing to help them rebuild,” she wrote.
The post was about Griff and Kit Goldsmith, her parents-in-law. They are due to have their first child in a few weeks, and Griff’s entire livelihood was lost in the flames.
But when supporters saw that someone as famous as Mandy Moore had shared a GoFundMe link to raise $60,000 for her own relative, some responses were downright hostile.
“The audacity of you, a multi-millionaire, to ask ordinary people living paycheck to paycheck to donate to YOUR family member,” charged one commenter, “when you could easily give the full target amount without it affecting your family financially any way.”
In addition to the Instagram post no longer being up, Moore also wrote a response.
She defended herself on Instagram
“People who question whether we are helping our own family or attribute an arbitrary amount of money that Google says someone has are NOT helpful or empathetic. Of course we are,” she wrote in a comment.
Mandy Moore added: “Our mate Matt started this go fund me and I’m sharing because people have asked how to help them. We also lost most of our lives in a fire. Please F OFF. No one is forcing you to to do something.”
Notably, the GoFundMe raised over $200,000 — presumably some of which came from Moore’s fans — before donations were closed.
